Sludge and Sediment Samplers

AMS sludge and sediment samplers retain relatively undisturbed samples from non-cohesive materials, including underwater sediment in shallow lakes, streams, and various types of impoundments.

 

The samples can be used for sediment profile descriptions, and geotechnical analysis. Samples for chemical analysis can also be obtained, but they are not suitable for EPA Level III or Level IV analysis for volatile organic compounds. These samplers are primarily used for shallow sediment sample retrieval, but deeper samples may be collected from pre-augered holes. Many of our sludge and sediment samplers may be used with or without liners. They are also very portable.

    Sludge and Sediment Samplers
    AMS meets the challenge of recovering representative samples of saturated materials by offering a variety of sludge and sediment sampling products. AMS sludge and sediment samplers are designed to retain samples from non-cohesive materials, including underwater sediment in shallow lakes, streams, and various types of impoundments. They can be used to take undisturbed samples for geotechnical analysis and are capable of taking high-quality samples for chemical analysis. They are primarily used for shallow sampling – up to 10 feet in the right conditions – but deeper samples may be collected from pre-augered holes. AMS sludge and sediment samplers may be used with or without liners and are very portable.

    AMS sludge and sediment sampling kits include everything you need to collect relatively undisturbed samples from non-cohesive materials and various types of impoundments.   The Multi-Stage Sediment Sampler Kit uses the advanced multi-stage sludge core tip, plastic soil core catcher, and liner to prevent loss of the sample upon retrieval.   The AMS SBS System is ideal for discrete interval sediment sampling in rivers, lakes, wetlands, and estuaries because it stops caving sediment.

    Russian Peat Borer
    The Russian Peat Borer is a side filling chambered-type sampler. This discrete point sampler enables one to drive the sampler to any point in the sediment profile in the closed (empty) position. Once the target depth is reached, the “T” handle is turned clockwise to initiate the sampling while the pivotal cover plate supports the cutting action of the bore. As the sampler is turned 180 degrees, the sharpened edge of the bore longitudinally cuts a semi-cylindrical shaped sample until the opposite side of the cover plate is contacted. The contained sample can now be recovered without risk of contamination by overlying sediments. The sample is extruded from the bore by a counterclockwise rotation where sample rests on cover plate ready for sectioning.   • Silt, Sand, and Bottom Dredges
    Silt, Sand, and Bottom Dredges
    AMS offers a variety of dredges designed for sampling sand and silt as well as most types of non-cohesive material. AMS sampling dredges are placed onto the bottom sediment, then closed and pulled up to retrieve a sample. Careful release of the sample distributes the sample approximately as it appeared on the bottom – making sediment profile description possible. The sample is not suitable for most geotechnical analysis and does not provide samples suitable for high-quality chemical analysis for volatile contaminants.
