Soil Augers

Soil Augers

AMS soil augers are commonly used for obtaining disturbed soil samples at or near the surface and for boring to depths where samples may be obtained with a soil sampler or soil core sampler.

 

AMS augers are available in all stainless steel for EPA testing or carbon steel bits with stainless steel cylinders for general soil sampling and augering. Perfect for augering shallow depths, AMS soil augers can also auger deeper depths and are generally limited by only the time and muscle of the user. In fact, users have recorded going over 100 ft using the AMS soil auger in a variety of soil conditions! But, if you want to speed up the process and rest your back muscles, AMS offers powered options too.

  • Regular Soil Augers
    Regular Soil Augers
    AMS Regular Augers are designed for use in most soil types.   The AMS regular soil auger is commonly used for obtaining disturbed soil samples at or near the surface and for boring to depths where soil samples may be obtained with a separate soil sampler or soil core sampler. The bits of the regular soil auger are open to allow entry of small soil clumps and relatively small rocks and particles.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type.   See Connection Types for more information.

    Mud Augers
    AMS Mud Augers utilize a laser-cut, open cylinder design for easy removal of heavy, wet, or clay soils.   The AMS mud auger features two openings in the cylinder wall to facilitate emptying as well as wider spaced bits than the AMS regular soil auger to ease entry of sticky soils.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type.   See Connection Types for more information.  
  • Sand Augers
    Sand Augers
    AMS Sand Augers are designed for use in sands and dry soils.   The AMS sand auger uses a closed bit design with a restricted opening to prevent the loss of sampled material during retrieval. The sand auger has a cylinder similar to the regular soil auger, but the inner edges of the sand auger bits touch at their mid point to make the sand auger a much more reliable auger in loose, unconsolidated soil conditions.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type.   See Connection Types for more information.

    AMS Reinforced Regular Soil Augers are specially designed for heavy-duty augering. They are built to withstand unusual, and considerable amounts of power .   Three gussets are added to our popular regular augers to provide added strength and durability. The gussets are designed to prevent the top of the soil auger fromtwisting or bending.   AMS Reinforced Regular Soil Augers are commonly used for obtaining disturbed soil samples at or near the surface in most soil conditions, and for boring to depths where soil samples may be obtained with a separate soil sampler or soil core sampler.     Professional Series Regular Soil Augers (3/4" Threaded)
    The new professional series regular soil augers have been beefed up from bit to bale. They feature the trusted AMS 3/4in threaded connection and have thicker (11 gauge) cutting teeth with stronger welds and extra tungsten carbide hard surfacing. Professional augers are also reinforced with extra gussets welded at both the top and bottom of the bail. The gussets help prevent the bail from bending or twisting when augering into hard or rocky soils, or when the augered hole is exceptionally deep.   These augers are perfect for those who want the strongest, most durable connection on all of their augers, extensions, cross handles, slide hammers, core samplers, and split-core samplers.   • Planer Auger
    Planer Auger
    The AMS Planer Auger removes loose soil and other materials from the bottom of an already augered hole.   This auger is fitted with a cutting blade on the underside of the auger cylinder. The flat, slotted design of the planer auger's head allows for the auger to remove loose material from the bottom of a borehole in preparation for collection of a soil core sample. The AMS Planer Auger is made with a carbon steel bail, stainless steel cylinder and tungsten carbide hard surfaced carbon steel cutting blade.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type.   See Connection Types for more information.  
  • Soil Recovery Augers
    Soil Recovery Augers
    Use this soil auger to auger and collect soil core samples at the same time.   The AMS soil recovery auger is a special dual-purpose tool that allows the user to auger an access hole to a desired depth. After reaching the sampling point, the user may then insert a liner into the soil recovery auger to collect a soil core sample. This versatile soil auger AND sampler can be used for soil profiling, particle distribution and environmental site investigations.   Includes: soil recovery auger cylinder with either tungsten carbide hard-surfaced carbon steel or stainless steel bits, a hollow, stainless steel top cap with a bail attached and a stainless steel solid-vented top cap, plastic liner, plastic end caps, and a universal slip wrench. NOTE: Available in stainless steel. But stainless steel bits are not hard surfaced.   Compatible with 5/8" threaded extensions and cross handles. The liners used are 1/4" smaller diameter than the sampler cylinder.   • Open-Face Augers
    Open-Face Augers
    The unique design of the open-face auger allows for quicker penetration into combination soils.   The cutting head of the AMS open-face auger helps the auger pull itself into the ground with little effort and yields quicker soil penetration. Because of its cutting head, and because its cylinder is made of thick, 10 gauge, high carbon steel, the open-face auger is especially useful in tough combination soils – from mud and clay to hard-pan.     Dutch Augers
    The AMS Dutch Auger allows you to easily collect disturbed soil samples in heavily rooted areas.   Hand forged from high-carbon steel and honed to a fine cutting edge, this auger will cut through highly fibrous and heavily rooted soils. It is excellent for use in, forests, vineyards and orchards.     Edelman Combination Augers
    Edelman Combination Augers are used in a variety of soil conditions.   The combination auger type gets a reasonably good hold of sandy material while more cohesive muds and clay soils can be fairly easily removed from the auger body.     The Stony Soil Auger is used for soils with a large gravel content.   The stony soil auger body consists of a heavy steel strip, vaulted all along, which is bent double by forging.     The compact telescoping soil augers have an internal extension that allows you to extend this 4' sampler to 8' with the simple push of a pin.   All AMS telescoping soil augers come complete with a comfortably gripped cross handle and an extendable extension piece. Telescoping augers are used for sampling to depths of 8'. These soil augers use snap pins to lock the cross handle, two concentric extendable extension pieces, and the bucket auger together. It is designed for easy transport and storage. Telescoping augers are just 5' 4" long and weigh between 5 to 8 lbs.     AMS Rocky Soil Screw Augers, with their heavy-duty design and extra large pilot tips, can easily drill through hard, rocky soils.   The AMS Rocky Soil Screw Augers are heavy duty soil augers designed for use with rotary hammer drills. They are made from heat treated high carbon steel and have oversized tungsten carbide-surfaced bits. These soil augers are typically used to penetrate very hard, rocky soils, asphalt and concrete.
  • Mini Spiral Auger Kits
    Mini Spiral Auger Kits
    The AMS Mini Spiral Auger Kit is used for creating a small diameter 1-1/4” borehole. It may be used in compacted soils where traditional soil probes cannot be pushed directly into the soil. Unlike traditional flighted augers, this 3-lead auger design is meant to trap the soil in between the auger flights so that visual inspection of the sample is possible. This makes this auger ideal for determining soil moisture depth as well as compositing soil samples. The auger may also be used for installation of soil moisture sensors or soil gas /groundwater points at shallow depths. The auger works best in cohesive soils.
