Agricultural Soil Augers

Agricultural Soil Augers

AMS offers a wide variety of auger heads so you can select the most suitable auger for your specific soil type. AMS augers use either a Signature Series, 5/8" Threaded or Quick Connect connection type to connect to extension pieces and cross handles. Extension pieces come in various lengths, and AMS cross handles are available with or without ratcheting action. One-piece augers – which provide the auger head, extension and cross handle as a single unit – are also available.

The new one-piece regular, mud, and open-face auger designs are perfect for farmers and researchers who need a robust and durable one-piece solution for sampling shallow depths. For those who need to reach deeper depths, the open-face auger design is also available as a seperate auger head that connects to AMS extensions using the Signature Series, 5/8” Threaded or Quick Connect connection types.
  • Regular Soil Augers
    Regular Soil Augers
AMS Regular Augers are designed for use in most soil types.   The AMS regular soil auger is commonly used for obtaining disturbed soil samples at or near the surface and for boring to depths where soil samples may be obtained with a separate soil sampler or soil core sampler. The bits of the regular soil auger are open to allow entry of small soil clumps and relatively small rocks and particles.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type. See Connection Types for more information.
  • Mud Augers
    Mud Augers
AMS Mud Augers utilize a laser-cut, open cylinder design for easy removal of heavy, wet, or clay soils.   The AMS mud auger features two openings in the cylinder wall to facilitate emptying as well as wider spaced bits than the AMS regular soil auger to ease entry of sticky soils.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type. See Connection Types for more information.
  • Dutch Augers
    Dutch Augers
The AMS Dutch Auger allows you to easily collect disturbed soil samples in heavily rooted areas.   Hand forged from high-carbon steel and honed to a fine cutting edge, this auger will cut through highly fibrous and heavily rooted soils. It is excellent for use in, forests, vineyards and orchards. The unique open design of the dutch auger also allows for easier removal of hard or wet soils.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type. See Connection Types for more information.
  • Open-Face Augers
    Open-Face Augers
The unique design of the open-face auger allows for quicker penetration into combination soils.   The cutting head of the AMS open-face auger helps the auger pull itself into the ground with little effort and yields quicker soil penetration. Because of its cutting head, and because its cylinder is made of thick, 10 gauge, high carbon steel, the open-face auger is especially useful in tough combination soils – from mud and clay to hard-pan. The open-face design also allows for a quick visual profile of the soil sample and for easy soil extraction. *Note: for even easier soil removal, try the AMS Idaho Spoon.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type. See Connection Types for more information.
  • Sand Augers
    Sand Augers
AMS Sand Augers are designed for use in sands and dry soils.   The AMS sand auger uses a closed bit design with a restricted opening to prevent the loss of sampled material during retrieval. The sand auger has a cylinder similar to the regular soil auger, but the inner edges of the sand auger bits touch at their mid point to make the sand auger a much more reliable auger in loose, unconsolidated soil conditions.   Please make sure any AMS samplers you intend to use together share a common connection type. See Connection Types for more information.
  • Gouge Augers
    Gouge Augers
Designed for sampling wet clay and peat!   The AMS gouge augers have a long, tapered stainless steel, semi-cylindrical chamber that is designed for collection of undisturbed soil samples from very soft and preferably very wet soils with minimal disturbance of soft cohesive layers. The gouge soil auger is pushed into the soil, twisted and recovered to display a full and virtually undisturbed soil profile of wet clay or peat soil.   The Gouge Auger requires attachment to a cross handle or slide hammer for use.
  • One-Piece Regular Soil Augers
    One-Piece Regular Soil Augers
This one-piece regular soil auger is powder-coated (orange) for rust resistance. The auger comes equipped with a 16" rubber-gripped cross handle and has a total length of 53". The lightweight (4 to 5 lbs) one-piece regular soil auger is an inexpensive alternative to our auger-extension-cross handle systems for anyone not needing to go deeper than 4 feet. This one-piece soil auger has carbon steel auger bits that are sharpened and heat-treated.   The 4" diameter one-piece regular soil auger is the is the ergonomic alternative to the cumbersome post hole digger – perfect for farmers, ranchers, and anyone needing to dig a larger diameter hole in regular soil conditions.
  • One-Piece Mud Augers
    One-Piece Mud Augers
One-Piece Mud Augers are powder-coated (black) for rust resistance and come equipped with an 16" rubber-gripped cross handle. This lightweight (4 to 5 lbs) one-piece wet soil auger is an inexpensive alternative to our mud auger, extension, and cross handle system for anyone needing to dig holes less than 4'. The complete mud auger set up is 53" in length. It has carbon steel auger bits that are sharpened and heat-treated.   The 4" One-Piece Mud Auger is a great alternative to the cumbersome post hole digger of for anyone needing to dig larger diameter holes in wet soils.
  • One-Piece Open-Face Augers
    One-Piece Open-Face Augers
The one-piece design of the One-Piece Open-Face Auger is all you need to penetrate to depth in combination soils.   The thick and sharp design of this versatile, 10 gauge, high carbon steel, one-piece open-face soil auger provides a robust complete soil auger system with an aggressive cutting head to yielding quicker soil penetration. The unique design of the open-face soil auger cutting head pulls itself into the ground with little effort and makes this auger useful in combination soils, from mud and clay to hard pan. The one-piece open-face auger comes equipped with a 16" rubber-gripped cross handle, and has a total length of 48".   The open-face design is useful for quick visual profile of soil sample and for easy soil extraction.
