PowerProbe Tooling

Direct Push Technology

Direct push technology allows for a wide variety of tooling and instrumentation to be advanced into a subsurface lithology using the static weight, hydraulic push force, and rapid hydraulic hammering of a PowerProbe. In many cases, direct push technology is the quickest and least expensive method when it comes to retrieving tests and samples. It is used to perform soil, soil gas, and groundwater testing, monitoring, and sampling; installing monitoring wells; geophysical and geotechnical assessments; and remediation investigations and implementations.

Direct Push Soil Testing, Monitoring, & Sampling

Direct push soil testing, monitoring, and sampling is highly effective in most unconsolidated lithologies, including sands, gravels, hard pans, high friction clays, tills, fill materials, and surface frost from the subsurface. Having the ability to recover continuous soil core samples through holes that are slightly larger than the core itself is huge. Direct push tooling can also involve two separate rod systems also known as Dual Tube Sampling. This first rod system is an outer drive casing that is advanced incrementally into the soil and the second rod system is an inner rod string that is cycled through the drive casing to collect samples in a liner. The Dual Tube Sampling System offers improved testing and sampling along with the flexibility to perform multiple sampling purposes in a single borehole without cross contamination.

Soil Gas Testing, Monitoring, & Sampling

Soil gas testing, sampling, and monitoring with direct push methods are commonly used for vapor intrusion investigations of VOCs and other potentially hazardous compounds that are considered risks to public health. Here at AMS, we offer many sampling options that complement a wide variety of regulatory and standard operating procedures. Testing, sampling, and monitoring soil gas vapor can be cost effective and simple with our tooling!

Groundwater Testing, Monitoring, & Sampling

AMS’s groundwater sampling tools are often used for initial site investigations because of the ability to rapidly sample a large number of locations. Small diameter groundwater monitoring wells are installed with direct push technologies and can be temporary or permanent. Our monitoring well installation kits provide most materials needed for a quick and successful installation!

Geophysical & Geotechnical Testing & Sampling

Geophysical and geotechnical testing and sampling investigations can be conducted with direct push technologies to depths ranging beyond 100 ft., depending on lithology. AMS offers a variety of split-spoon and Shelby tube sampling samplers. Such samplers can be used with AMS direct push tooling instead of hollow stem augers to provide an efficient and clean way of obtaining samples. For geophysical and geotechnical testing from the ground surface to approximately 10 ft., a variety of hand tooling equipment can be used in conjunction or independently, depending on the scope of work.

Soil & Groundwater Remediation

Depending on personal preference, soil conditions, and job site requirements, AMS can provide the correct tooling to accomplish desired remediation tasks. Having the proper tooling to neutralize waste material or reduce the concentration of contaminants in the soil and/or groundwater is imperative. To learn more about our remediation tooling and how it can be utilized for your project, please contact AMS.

Hollow Stem Augering

AMS's hollow stem augers provide field technicians with the capacity to auger through difficult lithologies, including hardpan, for conducting standard penetration tests, collecting samples with split-spoon and Shelby tube samplers, and installing conventional groundwater monitoring wells. AMS hollow stem augers can be used with PowerProbes and any other drilling rigs that are equipped with augering capabilities. AMS hollow stem augers also add versatility for direct push sampling when access to soils below hard soils layers is needed. Direct push sampling can be performed telescopically through the hollow stem augers as a means to reach deeper depths.
