Open-face augers are designed for hard, compacted soils, utilizing a specialized cutting head to improve penetration during manual borehole creation and advancement in dense soil conditions. If discrete sampling is required, boreholes can be advanced to a target depth before relatively undisturbed soil samples are subsequently collected with core sampling tools.
